Neuroscience PhD Application for Brandeis University

This is my personal opinion, but the Neuroscience PhD program at Brandeis University is the best in the country. At Brandeis, we do high caliber science in an extremely collaborative and nurturing environment. I started my PhD at Brandeis in Fall 2015. For more information regarding the program feel free to ask me on twitter or visit the website. Note: I have been on the Ph.D. admission committee for the past two years and willing to offer anyone advice on their application. Do not hesitate in reaching out.

SFN NSP Application

The NSP is a two year training program supported by The Society for Neuroscience. NSP fellows receive two-years of funding for travel, housing and per diem expenses at the annual meeting of SFN. Additionally, fellows have access to several online resources for professional development as well as networking opportunities. I applied to be an NSP fellow in 2017 and received the fellowship for the 2017-2018 terms. For more information regarding the fellowship and application due dates, visit the website.

Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (Parent F31)

[Download Here]

From the NIH, “The purpose of the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Individual Predoctoral Fellowship (Parent F31) award is to enable promising predoctoral students to obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting dissertation research in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The proposed mentored research training must reflect the applicant's dissertation research project and is expected to clearly enhance the individual's potential to develop into a productive, independent research scientist.” This grant is available to graduate students years 1-3. For me, this application was a valuable learning experience on grant writing. For more information, visit the NIH grants website.

The Neurobiology Course at The Marine Biological Laboratory

The Neurobiology Course at The Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, MA is a world-renowned training course for advanced experimental neuroscience techniques. I applied for and participated in the course as a student in 2018. I was invited back in 2019 as a TA for the electrophysiology section. For more information regarding the course and application due dates, visit the website.

The University Prize Instructorship

This application is perhaps only relevant to Brandeis graduate students, but I didn’t want to discount the possibility that others could find it useful. The UPI is a fellowship for senior PhD students at Brandeis that provides us with the opportunity to submit a proposal to teach a course as part of the official curriculum. For our proposal, we designed a course on the neurobiology of somatosensation. The fellowship was awarded and the course is scheduled for Spring 2021. For more information regarding this fellowship, visit the website.
