Pay it forward: Waltham High School Field Trip to Brandeis University (2017)
Organized by Dr. Olivier-Mason, 120 sophomores and juniors from Waltham High School visited Brandeis to learn about higher education opportunities and careers in science. The students on the field trip were students currently enrolled in either sheltered English immersion or C2 (low-level) biology and chemistry classes. These students are new to the country, and/or English is a second language, and/or are not typically aware of educational opportunities beyond high school. So together, Laura Laranjo and I each gave a 15-min talk to increase awareness of STEM careers. To better connect with the students, the talks were bilingual, incorporating English and Spanish. After our 15 minute presentations, the students had the opportunity to discuss graduate school with a bi-lingual graduate student sitting at their table. It was an amazing experience.
