Outreach at Texas A&M International University (2022)

Throughout 2022, I have been involved in multiple outreach projects at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU). TAMIU is my undergraduate alma mater and after finishing my Ph.D., I was excited to get involved at the school where my journey into science began.

First, I was invited by Dr. Marcus Ynalvez to participate in the “Brown Bag Colloquium Series” hosted for the College of Arts and Sciences. At this event, I got to present my research to a diverse group of professors— some of which were my own teachers once upon a time. This even took place on February 25, 2022.

Following the colloquium, I was invited by Dr. Ruvini Pathirana to give an outreach talk at her biology seminar. Biology seminar is a course for senior students majoring in biology and nearing the end of their BS or BA degree. The talk took place on March 22nd and there were approximately 25 students in attendance. It was a particularly energized crowd and I had a great time during the Q&A. I’m looking forward to presenting again in Dr. Pathirana’s seminar class in the near future.

That same afternoon, I gave a second outreach talk at TAMIU to a combined audience of students from the Tri-Beta Biology Honors Society and the American Medical Student Association (AMSA).

Most recently, I participated in a career seminar called “Coffee House Wednesday”. At this event I talked with ~50 student participants about my neuroscience research and careers in science. This was also a really successful event with lots of lively discussion.

TAMIU put together a press release about some of the work I’ve been doing and you can read it here.
